The destination

Budapest, Hungary's capital, is a city of striking contrast. Divided by the Danube River, it boasts two distinct sides: Buda and Pest. Buda, the hilly west, is home to historic landmarks like Buda Castle and Matthias Church, offering panoramic views of the city. Pest, the flatter east, buzzes with vibrant neighborhoods, including the trendy Jewish Quarter and the bustling Andrassy Avenue. Visitors can soak in the city's rich culture at the Hungarian State Opera House or relax in its many thermal baths, such as the famous Széchenyi Thermal Bath. With its blend of history, culture, and stunning architecture, Budapest offers a memorable experience for any traveler.

Holidays to Budapeststrike the perfect balance between old and new. Hilly Buda gives you history on tap, while Pest puts buzzing nightlife at your fingertips.

The Paris of the East
Budapest is a city of two halves – both in name and geography. It’s split by the Danube River, with Buda to the west and Pest to the east. The former’s crowned by a hilltop castle and a fortress, which offer up some of the best panoramas around. Meanwhile, the latter’s home to the quirky Jewish Quarter and the grand-and-Gothic parliament building.

Historic sights
Reminders of the past are everywhere you turn in Hungary’s capital – from the poignant Shoes on the Danube memorial to the charming Castle District and the enlightening House of Terror museum. Then there are the open-air ruin bars, found in the Jewish Quarter’s abandoned buildings. The most famous of which – Szimplakert – has become a Budapest institution. Here, you can take a seat in a cut-open car or bathtub, surrounded by graffiti-covered walls and junkyard-chic furniture.

Taking the waters
As well as a scene-stealing riverside setting, Budapest’s blessed with a collection of thermal springs. The mineral-rich waters supply the city’s popular bathhouses, hence its nickname – the City of Spas. They’re a treasure chest of architecture, too, from the Art Deco Gellert Baths to the Ottoman-era Kiraly Baths and the canary-coloured Szechenyi.

Travel advice

Best time to go to Budapest: Budapest’s weather varies depending on the season. Summer is the hottest and wettest time of year, with the mercury regularly topping 30°C. On the other side of the spectrum, the temperature can drop to zero during the dry, snowy winters. The city’s thermal baths are on hand for warming up, though. Despite this, many consider Budapest at its best in spring and autumn, when it’s not too cold or too hot, but dry and less crowded.

Passports & Visas: British citizens don’t need a visa to enter Hungary but must have a valid passport. For the most up-to-date passport and visa info, visit gov.uk/for…nts
