    WHAT IS PLEX!?

It a server piece of software. You install it on a computer, add in your music and video files (Movies, TV shows, cartoons, songs, albums, etc). Then you install a client piece of software (Xbox, PS, Smart TV, Windows, Android, iOS, etc) that gives you a slick app to stream your files.

Generally speaking the easiest way to get up and running with Plex is to buy a NAS (Network Attached Storage server) from a replitable company like Synology, Asustor, or QNAP and then install Plex as it part of their packaged apps, and leave it hidden a corner of the house. But you can always install Plex on any computer you have laying around.

    IS THAT IT?

Well, as long as you name your files correctly, Plex will automatically add cover art, list of cast members, episodes synopsis, metadata tags - and give you a lot of filtering and search options, including playlists. It can even keep track of a series you are watch across multiple devices, and inside and outside of your home network (as long as you set up remote access)

HOW MUCH DOES IT COST? WHY SHOULD I BUY A SUBSCRIPTION TO PLEX PASS OR THE LIFETIME MEMBERSHIP?

It's actually free of change for all of this - you can install the server and get free updates forever and watch on a number of devices.

If you get the lifetime Plex pass or a subscription you gain

    - The abilty to download files to the devices (otherwise you have to have a live network connection back to your plex server to stream)
    - The abilty to use Android and iOS apps (otherwise you only get 1 minute of playback. You can purchase a one-off access to use the mobile apps from the Play/Apple app stores as an alternative)
    - Skip intros and credits for TV shows and films either with a manual prompt or auotmatcally (otherwise the videos play normally)
    - More music features, such as a visualiser, lyrics and others
    - The abilty to use advanced conversion (hardware transcoding) when streaming to devices. Some devices, like the Xbox can't play all video file types. Plex gets around this by coinverting the video and audio files on the fly. This for me is the biggest plus, otherwise you may spend a while trying to always convert your video files to a format that works on all devices
    - And other features

SO WHY SHOULD I BOTHER TO USE PLEX AT ALL?

You might want to use Plex (or alterantives like Kodi, Jellyfin) if you...

    - Have a lot of video (Movie, TV Shows) and music files and want a slick way of searching, filtering and collating them
    - Want to playback your video files on a big TV
    - Want to play your files on 2 or more different devices, but avoid having to copy & paste (edited)

You should click the three dots on the deal link and add this text to the 'add info' option. It would save a lot of the usual questions that get asked over and over on these Plex posts.

For anyone who don't know what Plex is and it can do.

Plex is a media server that acts as a platform for organizing your digital media.
It allows you to consolidate movies, TV shows, music, and books into one place.
To use Plex, you’ll need your own media—either ripped from DVDs or Blu-ray discs, or shared privately by others.
Once you’ve stored your media on something like a NAS (Network Attached Storage) at home, you can access it 24/7.
Plex lets you enjoy your media anytime, anywhere.

Additionally, there are other free applications like Jellyfin and Emby that offer even more features than Plex.
Personally, I use Jellyfin for all my movies and anime.

You may find the difference below if you decided to dive into Media Server area.

Plex is self-hosted. You *are* the streaming service. This just adds features like hardware transcoding, offline client downloads and some other stuff.

Could this feasibly replace Netflix & Amazon for a non technical user? My biggest battle with the other half is that IPTV alternatives are not user friendly enough!
    SeanRTK's avatar
I'd imagine IPTV is more user friendly than setting up your own Plex server.

You'll have to be handy with a pc or laptop, purchase a blu ray drive to rip all of your own media, convert that media, store all that media onto hard drives. I'm up to 21tb so far. Then Plex will organise and sort all of it for you.

You could go down the plracy route and downlo*d media which has already been ripped and converted, but obviously that's not legal.

You can download Plex for free and use it now, you don't need the Plex pass. You can see what sort of content is on there for free, but I don't think the free content would be able to replace netflix and Amazon unfortunately.

My mate uses IPTV and its set up like sky glass, it works in the exact same way, I think that's about as user friendly as it comes. If the other half struggles with that Plex will be harder.

Unless you set it all up for her. Using Plex is a doddle, it's getting the content which is hard.

Was holding out for a discount, not in a mad rush but would like the skipping features. It looks a similar discount to the annual black Friday deal. Does anyone think it'll drop cheaper? Admittedly I'm thinking around 70 quid ish would be the cheapest last year
    SeanRTK's avatar
Just go for it. It's excellent. The quicker you buy it, the quicker you start benefiting from the additional features.

Put the extra £6 into the developers pocket and skip a coffee one day. You won't regret it.

PS. If you are set on getting it really cheap, I believe if you use a VPN and set your location to turkey it should be about half this price.

I'll add this into here so people can see it without expanding the replies.

It’s possible to get this via Turkey with a FUPS card for under £20. I can’t remember the exact method but I think it was just something simple like change vpn to turkey and pay with existing FUPS card. I did it in September last year

tried that but showing standard price with discount in US dollars. however, monthly fees showing local price.

I like the way people talk about jellyfin.

It's not available on my Samsung TV, Playstation or Xbox
    AntAwesome's avatar
It is available for Samsung. You just have to install it manually (side load it)
  8. warriorscot's avatar
I've had this for a few years, but would be of two minds now as Plex has gone a bit down hill, quite a lot of basic features haven't been worked on or have been broken for years and things like their own streaming content and crap that looks like ads keeps popping up and clearly is being worked on.

There's some other alternatives that are free to start with and just need a tad more work.

I've had my money's worth with plex, but I wouldn't pay for it again now.
    hotdealsuk1973's avatar
what things are you finding thats broken ?

i use it with multiple devices including apple tv ipad iphone and they all work flawlessly but i don't bother with 2160 i still use 1080 resolution.

edit you shouldn't be buying plex to use plex own content as its dire so i would agree with that

i haven't seen any ads i use it most days or is this again on their own content ? (edited)
  9. Blazzz's avatar
Not fully understood what Plex is.
Sorry, but other than my own content, what other content is accessible with this.
    SeanRTK's avatar
It's mainly for organising your own content. You can actually download Plex for free and see what additional content it may provide.

The lifetime subscription for £75 just unlocks additional features which you may not need. Lots of people use the free version for years and years and are happy with it.
  10. toto007's avatar
don't fall for it. plex lifetime is a scam. you still get all the ads. nothing in return
    SeanRTK's avatar
Not sure how it's a scam, before you purchase a Plex pass it tells you exactly what features you're getting in return. No where does it mention you won't see any ads.

    52759287-7sAbi.jpg
By the way I've had Plex for 10 years and I've never seen an ad, if you watch the free content then of course you'll see ads, the ads pay for the free content to be free.
  11. DarkenMcNasty's avatar
Switched to Jellyfin. You all should too. No more Plex pushing crap into my dashboards that I never asked for, then making it so hard to remove.
    SeanRTK's avatar
    What's your definition of hard?

    Click settings
    Click online media sources
    Disabled three options
    Click save

30 seconds and they are gone.
  12. Moss.b's avatar
So you can put all the movies you bought from play store, amazon video etc on there? What about blu ray rentals? Is there a limit on space? Ty
    SeymourHoffman's avatar
You host your own files, so the limit is your own hardware. Plex don't store anything.
  13. Uridium's avatar
If you happen to have an IPTV sub then with a Plexpass you can configure your IPTV m3u feed as a virtual DVR on your Plex server using a free app called xteve.
Allows you to view IPTV as live TV through Plex on any device and record shows.
Far better than the crappy IPTV apps (edited)

Can anyone advise me on this? If I get the Plex Pass, I can then set up accounts for other people to watch stuff in their own 'account', isn't that right? Does that mean each of those people need Plex Pass too, or can they just log in without a Plex Pass?

    jaffamuffin's avatar
Plex clients are more widely available on more devices , tvs, phones, tablets, toasters, etc  jellyfin last i tried didnt  have apps for my tv.  Grandma can use plex very easily too, jellyfin was a pain   But this was a few years ago. If its just for you and jellyfin works the  no advantage i guess?

Fantastic deal, but maybe not perfect for myself, because Synology's latest devices are useless at transcoding.
    gundo's avatar
Yeah my Synology has an AMD cpu and it's awful at transcoding.
  25. Gez777's avatar
As well as all the plex pass benefits discussed already, one killer feature for me is that
you can have your Plex Server - Client set up to download and play 1-5 new film trailers
(or set it to only play ones for films in your library) and end it up with the 'Pearl and Dean'
dada-dada-dada-der-daderda animation playing before your film starts! Pure HTPC bliss!

I bought the lifetime pass afew years ago back when they had a code and turkish lira was low think i got it for around 25-30 pounds well worth it i use plex more than any of my tv/film sources.
    drtesseract's avatar
Are there any drawbacks on doing through Turkey? just need a VPN to sign up and that's it i presume
  27. Richard_Mathews's avatar
You can also record live TV if you have a network tunerbox or a built-in TV card with your hardware.

Jellyfin is where it's at people.
    loftie's avatar
I'd love JF, but I definitely prefer the Plex UI, and it's easier for everyone who uses my server to navigate - one big list, not pages to faff about with.
Plex also is easier (AFAIK) to access outside my network, I don't have a static I.P. nor a DDNS. So plex handles all that for me.
JF still runs better for actual playback, and the ability to choose a third party media player makes my tablet able to play my hevc files via software, whereas Plex just refuses to do play it.
Also find Plex is better at picking out what files are and pulling the correct metadata, I've had more issues with JF naming things incorrectly.

I am now on free tier when I was a plex pass monthly user.
    what a joke. (edited)
    SeanRTK's avatar
Can't you just resubscribe to be a monthly user if that's what you want?
  37. DrDealittle's avatar
I'm probably very out of date with my knowledge on this but I seem to remember back in the day it was illegal to rip DVDs even if you owned them? It always struck me as odd as this was a different approach to CDs /music. Is this no longer the case? Do you leave the files in their native format (.vob) files and this picks them up from there? Looks decent
    TheStill's avatar
I don't think it is the actual ripping them that's illegal but the bypassing any copy protection the disc may have. But the reality is it is an unenforceable law unless you are being extremely stupid and ripping every new release and posting it to pirate sites. Even that maybe questionable given DVD/Bluray sales are massively down nowadays.
