HUKD help: How To Compose and Submit Deals on the forums!!

POSTED BY: emmajk42 6 months, 3 days ago

This is a " How To " thread, where you can hopefully pick up a few tips to make composing Hot Deals, Vouchers or Freebies a little easier... Thanks to Rayman and his last thread, from which the structure of this is taken.

P.S. Click the HUKD help tag below to see a few more helpful threads....

Firstly, I'll ask that you please, please perform a search to see if your deal has already been posted. If you're not too familiar with the search system, there is a handy help thread here.

To create any thread on HUKD, be it a deal post or a conversation topic in the misc forum, they all start from the same point, the "submit"" button, up at the top left. >>>

You'll then see this page:

Choose one of the categories by clicking on:

Deals: Use this for specific items for sale at a set price . eg: TFT Monitor at £100 , DVD at £17.99 , Book at £7.50 and so on... You can also use this for Sales in general. eg: Up to 70% off at Debenhams. You can also use this for information or advice that will save people money or help them receive special offers .

Vouchers: Use for any discount codes that give money off, special links that reduce a price or groups of codes for specific goods discounts.

Freebies: Use this ONLY for a totally free item with no sale value. downloads should ONLY be posted in the Free Software thread

The other categories are separate areas of the forums, and this help thread will focus on the deal posting areas above.

In this example we'll submit a thread for the "deal" category.

The next page will give you this option to choose a merchant or retailer. To utilise this, type the first few letters of the merchant you are interested in, and you should see a blue drop down box appear below the field, like this:

If you see the red circle, just be patient while the list loads. Then all you have to do is click the merchant name to select it. Sometimes if a merchant has 2 parts to their name, such as Empire Direct, you can type in one of the other words, and the merchant name should still appear…. Such as typing in “direct” in this example.

If you have tried all possible combinations you can think of and the merchant still does not appear, then you could add it as a new merchant. Please try not to create duplicate merchants - we already have links to all the major ones, so you shouldn't need to be creating new merchants for tesco and the likes!! If you really must create a new one, click "here" to add it. You'll see something like this:

Should you need to add a new merchant :
  • Firstly input the * Name : eg: HUKD Computers.
  • Then add the Website link/URL (http:// is already there). You only need to use the www part: eg: http://www.hukdcomputers.com.
  • You can leave the Link to Image File empty at this point, or if you have the image URL to hand, just pop it in there.
  • Then click on Add Merchant .
If you're using a pre-existing merchant, you'll see a yellow box at the top, containing the last 5 posted deals for that merchant, in that category. Scan your eye over these to make sure you are not duplicating a deal.

This should be the next thing you see, all the fields for you to compose your post:

Those with a red asterisk are required, others are optional fields.

Here is where you add the:
  • Title: example: £50 Off HUKD Computer - £100 Delivered [ Please be sure to include any delivery costs - the price and retailer name are usually included!
  • Description: including information about the deal, freebie, or voucher and how you get it - all the main points. Please do not just copy and paste in a wall of text, it is not necessary, as people can click through to the deal for more info.
  • Price: Use just digits here: eg : 100. Be sure to include deliverey charges where applicable as well.
  • Product name: eg: HUKD Computer
  • Availability: Choose from the drop down list either Online, Offline or Both.
  • Topic: Choose one from the drop down list that best applies to the deal. eg: Computers and Software
  • Link to image file: example: http://www.hotukdeals.com/images/hukd_logob.gif. This can be obtained by right clicking over an image and selecting either: Properties in Internet Explorer or Image Location in Firefox , then highlighting/copying the complete image URL/address/location and pasting it into the field, as above example. (gif or .jpg or .jpeg or .bmp or .png or .tiff or .tif)
  • Direct link: This can be obtained from your browser's address bar when on the product page. Please try not to paste in any affiliate or referral links, as they are not allowed on HUKD.
  • Tags: Tag your deal with any keywords you feel might apply. Some examples would be the brand name, wii, PS3, monitor, fashion etc etc.
  • Start & end date: Self-explanatory - just one note though - be sure to put the correct year in, as if you don't put a year, the deal will default to 1969 and become marked as "expired".
If a coupon has been previously posted on HUKD, you can attach it to your deal post. For example, if you are posting a Dell deal above, and you want to link it to the existing 10% off code. Just click the little checkbox before you click submit.

BEFORE you post your voucher, be sure to pop the code into the "quicksearch" box at the top right to see if it has already been posted. You can also add and attach a new voucher, if it has not yet been posted on the forums. If you click the "add new voucher" button, some new fields will appear which you can complete. For regular voucher posts, fields which may need clarification:
  • Titles: Many people forget to add the retailer name to thread titles when they are posting a voucher code - please be sure to add it in here.
  • Discount: This is the amount of the discount, be it £10 off £100, or 10%. If you are posting a free postage code, simply pop "Free postage" in this field.
  • Code: Paste or type the exact promo code in this field. If it is a direct linked discount, or a printable voucher, you can leave this field blank.
  • Minimum spend (£): Please remember to add the min spend in here, if there is one associated with the discount.
Click submit voucher when you or done, and click the final "submit" button at the bottom to complete your deal.

Thanks for sharing your finds with us. If we can help in any way, please post your query below and we'll see what we can do!

You need to upload them to an image host such as tinypic. Browse until you find the image you want and double click on it, click Upload then copy the link in 'IMG Code for Forums & Message Boards' and paste it into your post.

So long as the site where the image is taken from stays there, a quicker way is to right click the image, select properties, copy the URL and paste it into the HDUK form!

Not a good idea, hotlinking is frowned upon on the net, stealing bandwidth. Also, if it's a disreputable site, they could change the image to something nasty, which has happened in the past.

I'm confused
Isn't that what you are recommending in your post above. I quote

When you post a new deal, and paste the image link into the image URL field in the form, HotUKDeals makes a copy of that image onto their servers. So that's not stealing their bandwidth.

If however, you post an image in a reply in a thread, and just use the link from the retailer site, without uploading to imageshack first... then that is kind of frowned upon.

I did this in the amibees Amazon thread yesterday.

I am new to these things, so I shall see if I can upload it to photobucket and edit my post.

Everybody does it.... the danger is if you do it on a non-reputable site, they can change the image to something nasty.
