Team HUKD.........We are computing for cures......JOIN US..

POSTED BY: vaiopup 2 months, 5 days ago

Greetings.

For those HUKD folk who would like to make use of their spare cpu cycles I have created a little POEM@home team.

Come join us and enter the fun, competitive and rewarding world of Distributed Computing.

I will post up relevant links and if anyone has any questions about what we do here please fire away and I will answer as best I can as soon as possible.

I hope some of you will come and support this effort.

Anyway.......

The project homepage is: http://boinc.fzk.de/poem/
Team HUKD can be found here: http://boinc.fzk.de/poem/team_display.php?teamid=666

Team thread at Poem: http://boinc.fzk.de/poem/forum_thread.php?id=241

At the moment I am the only team member but I am sure one or two of my friends will be along shortly to help get the team started.

Then I am hoping enough of you will join the effort and take it forward.

Lets see how high up the rankings Team HUKD can get and help Biological/Medical science in the process.

Thanks for reading and I hope to see your name on the team roster soon.

regards

vaio.

*GETTING STARTED*

To get started one needs to go to http://boinc.berkeley.edu/

Download and install Boinc (a project manager).

Then:

Click the tools tab.
Click "attach to project" and enter http://boinc.fzk.de/poem/

As a new user type in your username and password.

It will then attach to the Poem server and download your initial work.

There are many settings which can be adjusted, but that can be gone into later.

*Please note that running this project fully utilises your computer processor so it will add something to your electricity bill--------one or two computers won't make much differrence to your bill but lots of machines and the bill could increase a fair bit*

*ONLY DO AS MUCH AS YOU CAN COMFORTABLY AFFORD.*

Yup, I put in 3 years or so there.....it's all good...but the folding client can be a pain and Stanford sucks up to Sony/ps3 users too much for my liking....they diregarded the long term pc contributors in the blink of an eye.

There is lots of information on the project homepage

I am sure that and the links from it will tell you all you need to know.

In a nutshell it is one of many scientific projects targeting disease and a better understanding of them.....hopefully leading to progress/cures.

It can also be a fun and competitive pastime.

Onwards and upwards

I think you're an utterly insane human with your obscenely oversized farm and all that, but as someone who considers madness quite a positive quality, I'd like to help out. Tell me, what client is a boy like me, packing a Core2Duo E8400, WinXP32bit and an AMD 3850 256MB graphics card, to pick up?

I'm not mad with an oversized farm, that'd be Mike

Erm, your E8400 would run Poem just great.........but there is no GPU client, only Folding@home has that.

That reminds me, I need to post installation instructions.

Entirely dependent on cpu speed and the particular work unit.

My Allendale at 3 ghz os so gets units ranging from 90 minutes to maybe 5 hours.
You 8400 should cruise

edit: oops, isn't you with the 8400
I should sleep more.
