I'll probably get flamed for my comment but I speak from experience and just wanted to share it with anyone thinking about buying a pair of walking boots.

I own quite a bit of Berghaus gear and consider it to be a quality brand. However, I've had Berghaus boots (similar to these) and they're definately NOT one of the best. They're adequate for a stroll down to the pub but if you're planning a day on the hills leave them in the car. The soles have dangerously poor grip in the wet compared to a Vibram sole, and for that reason I'm voting cold. I would never buy another pair of Berghaus boots unless they had Vibram soles.

These are a summer boot designed for light hiking. A goretex lining isn't a priority here unless you just want to show off the label. Quite often with budget boots the option is either a Goretex lining OR a Vibram sole. I'd opt for the Vibram sole.

Meindl, Scarpa, Zamberlan etc are far superior boots. Merrell make great lightweight shoes similar to these, although they're twice the price.

is definately worth a punt.

One more thing, the womens goretex coats look like really good value.

I'm interested that you'd recommend Karrimor when so many are saying how inferior they are nowadays. Is your experience different? Are the above Karrimors different in quality to the ones you get in Sports World?

Over the years I have had a ruck sack - three fleeces (bought at once) - and a holdall from Karrimor.

The rucksack needed the stitching fixed on its second trip (about 13 months) which showed that the waist strap had only been sewn entirely at one side and had the little climp of stitching that burst at the other. The mesh pocket had gone all puffy when I returned from the second trip - so although it still working looked a mess - then the two plastic buckles to hold the top closed became too weak to keep closed after about three years.

Two of the three fleeces lost their pile and became like tights at the back after being used mainly for driving (it was the only time I sat on them) within about 2 - 3 months of use,

The holdall is my GFs and although having a coiled plastic spring has held together and seems OK.

I would not wear their clothing or buy their rucksacks again - but I have not heard anything bad about their shoes.

It all sounds just cause to avoid the brand in general.

Regarding the quality of Karrimor - didn't I read on here last year that the owner of Sports World bought the Karrimor label? From memory it was a thread about Karrimor rucksacks and how awful the quality is. The conclusion that I drew from reading the comments on that thread, and also on another forum, was that there is a really cheap line of Karrimor gear (mainly rucksacks) that are distributed by Sports World. However, if you buy Karrimor from Blacks/Milletts etc you get the original good quality gear.

That seemed to be the overall opinion of the people who left comments on the threads.

My experience of Karrimor is as follows: A friend of mine bought the Karrimor shoes (that I mentioned in my earlier post) from M and M Direct last year. The boots that he was replacing were also Karrimors. He uses them for walking the dogs (daily), mountain biking and hill walking. They've seen all kinds of terrain and weather and they're still in great condition. That's the reason I'm going to buy a pair to replace the Berghaus shoes that I've got.

I bought a pair of Karrimore boots last year from Mountain Warehouse , they have "event" suppposedly waterproof lining similar to Goretex ... NO IT ISNT, its ****

Mine covered approx 1200 miles (daily dog walking soon adds up) and are totally worn out, the soles were Vibram but a very poor quality variant that had poor grip on wet stones. (Not all vibram soles are created equally)

Would I buy another pair ?

On the Karrimore stuff, it is well known to be the budget end of things, all be it high end of the budget stuff. All though many places try and seel them at high end prices. When the sales hit, watch the karrimore stuff suddenly become very cheap.

And I would buy Berghaus over Karrimore 9 times out of 10.

The only negative feedback i've seen for Karrimor is for their footwear and mainly coming from Sports Direct.

I think we've established something here...Vibram soles are good but not necessarily the Karrimor version.
