Just a heads up for those who might be interested in buying an XPS laptop - they are absolutely WONDERFUL, best laptops ever in my opinion.
However, any laptop with an 8400 or an 8600 video card from any manufacturer is at risk of failure.
This is not Dell's fault, or HPs fault, or any laptop maker's fault. Nvidia has made its chips badly.
But it looks like most manufacturers are just trying to keep them from failing long enough to get them out of warranty. In a worst case scenario, an nVidia powered laptop is unlikely to last more than a few months, and will be worthless after the warranty expires.
I would wait and see how this plays out before comitting to a laptop now, unless you don't need 3D performance - in which case, get a laptop with no Nvidia parts in it.

The inquirer article is a bit over the top, but there is obviously a serious problem, and I would strongly advise people to see what guarantees are likely to be offered, before comitting to any new machine with one of these parts.
