Apple iPhone 3G Vs Samsung i900 Omnia Vs HTC Touch Diamond

POSTED BY: LazyDonkey 3 months, 2 weeks ago

I've currently got an unlocked 1st gen iPhone on an expired Orange contract, so Im looking to upgrade. Obviously unless I switch to O2 the 3G iPhone is out, but the other 2 handsets have been offered free.

The Diamond is a good size, but is let down by the measly 4GB limited storage and no flash on the camera. There also appears to be some problems with the interface.

The iPhone is a classic, but Apple have definitely missed a trick by not including a better camera, flash, front facing camera, multimedia messaging etc maybe next time Apple will make a much bigger leap?

Samsung Omnia of course looks like the best machine all round, but no one I know has got one. However, the screen resolution is a real let down, plus the wierd dimensions. In online demos it looks like the screen sensitivity is poor in comparison to the iPhone. Otherwise it does appear to have everything.

Any views???

There are other issues about the iPhone that you've failed to mention though.

There are numerous complaints about its 3G capabilities and signal lose. Indeed, until last Thursday, I had a 3G iPhone but took it back because of this. As well as this, the GPS is very poor and useage in the real world not much cop. On top of this, you cannot use third party apps unless you jailbreak it and void the warrenty.

I agree the DT not having an expansion slot is a flaw, but since my current Kaiser only has a 2GB card in the slot, its a mute point. But if that is the issue, go for the Touch Diamond Pro, which does has an expansion slot.

I dont know anything of the Samsung, so cant comment, but one further phone to add to your list would be the SE Experia which looks very nice.

I'll probably keep using my jailbroken 1st gen iPhone, but if Im going to upgrade for free I might as well get the best handset I can. Only problem with Orange is the fact that they always take so long to release handsets.
The Samsung Omnia would appear to be an exception.

I tried a htc instore for a while but couldn't get on with it. I went for the 3g iPhone but as guv said I hardly ever see a 3g signal so it's on 2g anyway. I might return my iPhone and get a 2g one without a contract as although the manufacturers are trying, there isn't anything outstanding enough to original iphone as yet! I'm posting on from the 3g iPhone atm btw

To be honest, I thought (and the store suggested) I just had a bad one. But too many are saying the same thing.

Seems Apple (like M$) release goods before they are proven after all!

It's out on Orange as it was offered to me as an upgrade, although it isn't listed on their website yet.

Heyo, couple of points.

I have the 3G iphone, and I must say, its simlar to the other one, just added apps. I dont use the 3g because as similar comments say, the signal is no good and it always goes. So I have switched it to 2g for now. - The updates are coming through, 2 lots of bug fixes so far so its not bad at the moment, and quite fast. - Although you dont have some features like mms and flash etc, I do find that emailing photos is very easy and quick, and to be honest with you, emailing a photo is alot better.

The SMS 'chat' feature is very handy, and I dont know what I would do without it. - Iphone all the way from me, after reading this thread, I had a look at the phones you have mentioned, and I couldnt make the transition, the iphone wins hands down.

On another topic. - A colleague of mine phoned up orange to cancel, stating she was offered a new contract with a free laptop. Orange said to keep her they would crdit £400 to the account for the laptop, and give an upgrade. So dont just upgrade, go for the full works!

If you go to retentions and say you are going to leave, they will be have the powers to offer you a Personal Discount Allowance specifically relating to your contract. This can be used to reduce the Talkplan costs, or give you free accessories. If you just go through to the upgrade dept. you will not be given this discount. They might take £5 off and make you think that you are getting a good deal.

The fact your friend got a £400 'laptop' credit, was probably due to the fact that she already had this allowance on her account in the event that she wanted to leave. Note: any discount applied to a retention deal will only last for as long as the new contract.

As for the iPhone vs. Omnia (lets exclude the Diamond as it seems to be regarded as a bit of a gimic), I picked this up from another site:-

Samsung i900 Resolution 240 x 400 pixels VS. iPhone 3G’s 320 x 480 pixels
Samsung Omnia advertised battery is 5.80 hours, delivered 4 hours and 20 minutes of talk time VS. iPhone 3G advertised 10.00 hours, delivered 4 hours 27 minutes of talk time
Samsung has MicroSD card slot (iphone has none)
Much better 5 megapixel camera (better processing, higher resolution, face and smile detection, geotagging) vs. same old 2.0 megapixel camera.
TV-out (iphone lacks that)
TouchWiz user interface VS multi-touch interface.
Microsoft Window Mobile 6.1 Professional VS Mac OS X v10.4.10
Copy/Paste performance ( iphone offers none)
Omnia offers voice dialing and recording, but the iphone 3g still missing those features.

The new 3g Iphone does not appear to be any better than the original......which is a shame.
Hype over substance me thinks !!!
