Are Tesco dodgy by knowingly overcharging (et al)?
POSTED BY: ibiza 2 months, 3 weeks agoI saw a post elsewhere here asking about a site that claimed Tesco was ripping people off. I have copied this post as the first post to make the links live. Everything stated is a reference to the content of the sites, and is not advocating its content - that is for you to decide.

It was based on prices scanning at a different price to those displayed.
Also yellow shelf edge specials seem to have small dates at the bottom - and are displayed AFTER the date has passed.
I remember in the past a Tesco advert showing a character played by Prunella Scales getting a 100% refund for being overcharged - but it seems this policy was stopped - as it was too easy to get your messages free.
Tesco obviously stood to lose from there own advertised policy - and it was ended. Not before this site claims numerous reasons were offered to customers as a reason for not honouring the advertised policy,
It also claims a spin was offered to the Telegraph last year - 'In a statement to the Daily Telegraph who ran a report on the policy's demise, Tesco blamed their customers for "exploiting" the policy.' However, I fail to see how taking something legally and contractually from someone who is trying to take money from you illegally (and in order to avoid a massive fine) is a form of exploitation.
Negligence is negligence - its a bit like claiming people would rush to poor doctors to reap the compensation. If the overcharging was sufficiently bad to permit its exploitation, then how much was this overcharging earning Tesco?
Roughly £400 000 000 a year the site claims (based on a study of 17 stores expanded as a representation of all UK stores).
The site also states the following...
"It's official: Tesco Chief Executive says "It's OK for us to charge you more than the price on the shelf"... " I am very sorry that you feel that this was misleading, however, as long as the expiry date is clearly displayed, we can continue to sell a product after an offer has expired.""

Not just Tesco's I think all supermarkets have problems with different prices at the till & still charging full price for 'reduced' items .. I always check my receipt now before leaving the stores & 9/10 times find a mistake .. Waitrose is the worse for charging you full price even though there is a great big Red sticker reducing the item ................... I pack slowly & watch every item !! I usually scan my own shopping but them machine's are carp  |

morrisons are the wost for putting a promotion price under VERY similar items but the wrong one so u get fleeced like that. i try to check whilst its going thru the till still save trapsing over to the customer services, which in our morrisons and tesco's both need training in very simple manners, please and thankyou, go a long way in my books |

yeah we always check our recipt too. specially if got special offers on them. and many times ive had to go to tesco customer services. morrisons are the wost for putting a promotion price under VERY similar items but the wrong one so u get fleeced like that. i try to check whilst its going thru the till still save trapsing over to the customer services, which in our morrisons and tesco's both need training in very simple manners, please and thankyou, go a long way in my books |

............................... & remember if you have to take something over to Tesco's customer servies desk that has been overcharged at the till they will give you back DOUBLE the difference ... (so don't say anything if you notice it at the checkout!!) Keep's them on their toes  |

I wouldn't know if I was overcharged or not because I cannot remember the prices of everything I bought - in Tescos I spend on my main shopping trip over £ 150. therefore there is no way I could remember the prices I never really shop in that sense - as I tend to go in to buy one thing and virtually never food - but may pick up one or two things on the way out. I never even use a basket. I used to buy vegetable oil for my car there - but they priced themselves out of competitiveness. But my other half shops there often - so there is no way she would know what the total for a trolley load should be. The site I mentioned in the initial post claimed there was an investigation by the Irish government - which found the rate of overcharging to be 3%. Realistically you are not going to catch it unless you shop with a dictaphone (or record function on a mobile) then check the receipt and dictaphone when you get home. If you were overcharged by 3% with the double refund mentioned above - you could save £9 per shop. Perhaps I should post this as a deal!!!  |
