I don't think this is a USB powered drive - the description on the WD site says:

Package Contents
  • External USB 2.0 hard drive
  • USB 2.0 certified cable
  • AC adapter
  • Quick Install Guide
The phrase "AC adapter" gives it away a bit.

Having said which - hot deal! That's a seriously impressive amount of kit at a very small price.

I don't know about reliability but what has stopped me purchasing the WD external hard drives is that they choose not to allow you to share mp3, divx etc over your network.

who do they think they are?

Well, that'll only be network enable models, which this isn't but I understand where you're coming from. Give them an inch...

Just a warning about Play, particularly if these do prove to be unreliable:

"Our returns policy is valid for 28 days from receipt of an item."

This is their returns policy, and I naively assumed that it would be extended if they supplied faulty goods.

Be warned - it won't. Exchanged emails with them a while back over faulty goods bought outside this very short period of time, and they refused point blank to do anything about it. Basically, if your very expensive piece of kit fails 5 weeks after you've received it, you're on your own!

A UK retailer wouldn't be able to get away with this because of the Sale of Goods legislation which protects consumers. Jersey doesn't - yet - have one in place.

Buy from Play at your own risk!
