Bicycle recommendations!

Hi,

I'm looking for a hybrid road bike for use while at university, but I have little idea of what is good in terms of components and spec so would be grateful for any advice. I'm hoping to find one that is on special offer so that i'll be getting something of a higher quality than i would otherwise have been able to afford.

I've found a 2006 Marin fairfax - apparently reduced from £555.99 to £349.99.

Nexus hub so good for people who don't want to have to do a lot of cleaning or maintenance due to road grime.

If you're used to looking after derailleurs, though, at some point you've got a learning curve.

Bet you've binned that "power modulator"

You're absolutely right about the Nexus hub. Far less troble than derailleurs, which I've gladly given up as too much trouble for general purpose cycling.

Didn't even notice the power modulator (whatever it is!) - so not a problem.

Didn't even notice the power modulator (whatever it is!) - so not a problem.
It's a little battery shaped gubbins (the spec of your bike says it has one...) they often put just by the noodle on the front V-brake, because apparently a front v-brake is just too powerful, it needs a bit of mechanical assistance to "modulate" the power.

The reality is it just serves to make the front brake a bit mushy, and attempts to absolve the manufacturer of any liability from accidents or injury caused by heavy use of the front brake (I **** you not!).
