Going on holiday - Suitcase or Holdall?

POSTED BY: Jenny1979x 2 months, 1 week ago

I am going on holiday in 3 weeks, and i usually take suitcases with us, but this time, our luggage allowance has been dropped from 20kg to 15kg.
I weighed my suitcases without anything in, and they weigh almost 6.5kg alone. When you have 3 children, two of which are 2 and 3 and need lots of clothes, 7kg lost in each case is alot!
My friend who is going away with us, has brought some large trolley holdalls, weighed them and they weigh 2kg.
But what i wanted to know is, does anyone have any experience with taking holdalls instead of suitcases? Will my clothes and things be safe in there? Or would i be better off sticking to the suitcases?

I took 2 huge holdalls that I bought in a sale in Argos (4.99 or 9.99 each) to take to Jamaica to save on weight and they survived perfectly.

One since went to Cuba as well as is still fine.

Hope this helps

Edit: Aah, it was the same one as this, but think it was half price when I bought it

It really is huge, you may only need one

Just got back flew with Monarch and their allowance was 15 kg, we were 2lb over on each case coming back and (after having been delayed 26 hrs going out they tried to charge us 15 dollars per case - was a little (to say the least, upset )so said ok I will take my suitcases back and put on 2kg worth of clothes which I did, they still had to carry the weight but t was on me, hubby and daughter - silly really! but beware THEY WILL CHARGE you, never go charter again will go scheduled a my other daughter's allowance was 44kg plus 5kg carry on
Oh and by the weay they DONT weigh your carry on so just put some heavier things in that and all have a back-pack - I would go for the holdalls they are less weighty and it will give you some weight for coming back
Have a good time

We always use holdalls. Just be careful though as your bags can't go over a certain weight. We took one bag beween 3 of us ( 1 was an infant), it was 30kg and we had to buy another bag at the airport to distribute the weight between 2 bags. Some airlines do weigh hand luggage so be don't go too over the recommendations

Aah, didn't know there were 5 of you.

We took 2 of these to Jamaica for 2 adults, 2children, 7 days/2outfits a day and still had space in the bags!

These 15kg allowances are a joke now. I'll get slated for it but surely if weight is such an issue then they should start to factor in people's bodyweight.

How can it be right that a 6 stone person with 18kg of luggage gets an excess charge yet a 20 stone person with 15kg luggage does not?

The 'larger' person is in fact taking up 89kg more weight!
