A Cheap LEGO Dimensions Game for All Consoles
LEGO Dimensions is a game for all major modern consoles which takes some of the most popular LEGO characters and allows gamers to control them as they handle a huge variety of challenges and tasks. Packs vary wildly from Harry Potter to Gremlins but always feature family-friendly gameplay and excellent graphics. Whether you are a long-term LEGO fan or just an avid gamer, the LEGO Dimension titles are great fun to play.
LEGO Dimensions: Fun in the LEGO Universe
As the name suggests, LEGO Dimensions grew out of the LEGO brand. Founded in Denmark in the 1950s, LEGO pioneered the use of standardised plastic blocks which could be arranged and assembled however their users desired. This soon developed into offering themed kits, with subjects like emergency services, armies and city life represented. Nowadays, the breadth of physical LEGO kits is huge, spanning most major movie franchises and offering a limitless array of ways to enjoy the brand’s construction kits.
It was inevitable that LEGO would enter the video games arena at some stage. Starting with LEGO Island for Windows 95, they have moved on to produce 65+ titles across almost every system in existence.
Dimensions first arrived in 2015 as a licensed title (meaning that LEGO permitted a separate company to produce and market it). Developed by Traveller's Tales, it followed what is called a “toys to life” idea, featuring a toy pad where players could position actual LEGO figures as part of the on-screen action.
The idea proved popular, and LEGO Dimensions has added packs from 30 separate movie and TV franchises. Here’s a little bit more about how the game works.
How Does LEGO Dimensions Work?
LEGO Dimensions features a blend of physical interaction and digital gameplay. To start with, players place their figurines onto the Toy Pad, which triggers the game to enter a specific Adventure World. When they get there, players have to solve puzzles and follow the adventures laid out for their characters, each of which have special skills.
When you complete a task, whether it’s with Gandalf or Batman, you will receive gold bricks – the in-game currency which allows players to upgrade their characters’ skills and vehicles. There are also red bricks, which unlock special abilities and features.
Traveller’s Tales have opted to create a pack-based system which only allows players to access Adventure Worlds if they posses specific packs (and the physical LEGO toys that come with them). This can get a little pricey if you feel the need to access every single level, so buying packs intelligently becomes an important consideration.
What Kinds of LEGO Dimensions Packs are Available?
LEGO Dimensions has quickly accumulated a massive variety of game packs, so there will surely be something to suit everyone’s tastes. However, it’s important to realise that not all of these packs offer the same features. For instance, you’ll find:
Story Packs – Featuring a maximum of six additional levels for Dimensions players to enjoy, always based around a specific franchise. Story packs available include: Ghostbusters, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them and the LEGO Batman Movie. Basically, these packs are retellings of the narratives in the movies concerned, so if you are a fan, you’ll love them.
Level Packs – More limited, these packs come with a single character from their respective franchises as well as vehicles or other items that they can use in the Adventure Worlds. Franchises on offer include: The Simpsons, Portal 2, Back to the Future, Ghostbusters, Midway Arcade, Adventure Time, Mission: Impossible, the Goonies, Sonic the Hedgehog and Doctor Who.
Team Packs – Expanded versions of Level Packs, these packs contain a couple of characters (or more) and a range of additional objects or vehicles. They are available for franchises like: Scooby-Doo, Jurassic World, DC Comics, the Powerpuff Girls, Doctor Who, LEGO Ninjago, Adventure Time, Harry Potter, Teen Titans Go! and Gremlins.
Fun Packs – Contain a character and a single item (so they are the cheapest and most basic packs to buy). Franchises covered include: Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, the Wizard of Oz, LEGO Legends of Chima, Ninjago, the LEGO Movie, Ghostbusters, the Simpsons, Adventure Time, the A-Team, Doctor Who and Knight Rider.
As you can probably tell from the list above, LEGO Dimensions players get to choose between a vast array of franchises. These include children’s shows like the Powerpuff Girls, 80s TV and movies like Gremlins, the Goonies or the A-Team, comic book franchises like DC Comics, cartoons like the Simpsons and fantasy themed packs from Tolkien or Harry Potter.

Which is the Right LEGO Dimensions Pack for Me?
With so much choice available, picking the right LEGO Dimensions packs can be tough – and they aren’t always cheap, either. If you need to buy four or five packs to unlock all of the Adventure Worlds you want to explore, costs can quickly mount, making it essential to shop around for LEGO Dimensions discounts at HotUKDeals.
However, every LEGO Dimensions player needs to get hold of the Starter Kit. This is non-negotiable. It’s also a great introduction to the LEGO Dimensions universe, telling the story of how a portal opened up, sucking LEGO characters into other dimensions, and how Gandalf, Batman and Wildstyle decided to rescue them by journeying into these action-packed Adventure Worlds. Importantly for Dimensions players, the Starter Pack comes with the LEGO Portal, which zaps other characters into their Adventure Worlds and can’t be found in other packs.
After that, it depends on which characters you want to take control of. The three initial characters provide plenty of entertainment, but most players will be able to complete their Adventure Worlds eventually, raising the question of which pack to buy next (if any)?
It might be best to go by the recommendations of LEGO Dimensions experts when assembling your pack collection. For example, reviewers raved about the Midway Classics packs, which allowed players to enter the world of Pacman and other beloved arcade characters. Another big favourite has been the Simpsons pack, which gives you Homer to play around with, while the Doctor Who level pack was also a massive hit.
Some of the Team Packs are also more valuable than others – this mainly applies if Level Packs haven’t arrived for specific franchises. Scooby Doo is a great example, where the Team Pack is the only way to access the Scooby Doo Adventure World. However, if you want a particular franchise and you have a choice between a Team Pack and a Level Pack, go for the Level Pack if you can, as you’ll receive an extra level along with the in-game characters and objects.
Another thing to remember, or at least try to bear in mind, is that you don’t need all of the various packs to extract a lot of enjoyment from LEGO Dimensions. The Starter Pack provides the most gameplay of all, and a couple of other Level or Team Packs will keep most gamers happy.
Is LEGO Dimensions Ideal for Multiplayer Gaming?
This is one of the major drawbacks about LEGO Dimensions for many gamers: it doesn’t come with a large-scale multiplayer world to explore and interact with other players. Instead, you’re generally left to discover things, use your powers and solve tasks on your own. This can be great fun, but if you love the thrill of meeting others and taking them on, it’s not the game for you.
Having said that, LEGO Dimensions does have a two player mode. If you have a LEGO obsessed friend, they can play on the same console or computer and drop into your game worlds, helping you to solve the various challenges that your character is presented with. But there’s no online multiplayer option (although a web connection is required to send updates).
There’s also a newer Battle Arenas mode. This is a major departure for LEGO Dimensions, which allows up to four players to battle it out in special combat maps. The arenas need to be unlocked by buying Expansion Packs and earning gold tags, but it’s worth the effort. They can’t be played online though, and are available only via local play.
How Does LEGO Dimensions Compare with Disney Infinity?
There’s no getting away from it: LEGO Dimensions is in direct competition with Disney Infinity – a similar style of toy-to-screen game which was produced between 2013 and 2016. Disney seem to have abandoned the idea, although you can still derive a lot of enjoyment from the previous instalments (which were made for Wii U,Wii, 3DS, Xbox 360, Xbox One, Windows, PS3 and PS4. But how does it stack up against LEGO Dimensions?
One thing that really sets LEGO Dimensions apart is its fidelity to the LEGO brand. When you buy LEGO Dimensions packs, the characters you receive aren’t just appendages to the game and the technology needed to enter the Adventure Worlds; they can also be used as real-world toys just like any other LEGO figurines. That’s not really the case with Disney Infinity.
Then again, Disney Infinity offered a completely different mixture of characters to LEGO Dimensions. Disney Infinity players could take control of Disney favourites like Donald Duck and Mickey Mouse (of course), but also characters from the immensely popular Star Wars universe like Han Solo and Chewbacca.
Disney Infinity could also be a more convenient option for players at home. While the LEGO Dimensions Portal looks the part and is fun to assemble, it’s not so great when you need to tidy it away without losing any pieces, and no-one really wants to have to reassemble it every time they play. With Disney Infinity, all you need is a simple base.
However, LEGO Dimensions crafts a more compelling, unified story for players to lose themselves in. It has deeper gameplay, slightly more humour, and a generally more satisfying feel. Disney Infinity was accomplished and still plays well, but Disney may have lost interest in developing it because it clearly couldn’t match LEGO Dimensions in the personality stakes.
Where Can I Find Support for LEGO Dimensions?
LEGO Dimensions can be complex to set up, purchase and play, so it’s useful to know where to access customer support for when you need it. The best source of information for UK gamers is probably Dimensions UK, where you’ll find guides about “how to play”, character breakdowns, product lists and much more.
There are Dimensions Apps for Android and iOS phones which let you browse expansion packs wherever you go, share in-game videos with friends and create LEGO Dimensions wish lists (sometimes it can be hard to track which packs you need and which ones you have!).
There are also plenty of videos including trailers for the various Adventure Worlds and entertaining features based on the various LEGO Dimensions characters. It all helps to get an idea of which packs are absolutely essential, which ones would be nice to have and which ones you definitely don’t need.
The Best LEGO Deals UK
LEGO Dimensions is a must for all LEGO gaming fans offering a portal into imaginative worlds full of challenges and enjoyment. However, due to the way that LEGO have set up Dimensions packs, buying the game can be incredibly complex and costly.
The thing to do is plan your purchases sensibly. By all means begin with the Starter Pack and a Fun Pack or Level Pack that features a franchise you like. Be sure to check the LEGO website’s videos section before you buy, and read a few reviews as well. Not all LEGO Dimensions packs have been rapturously received (though most of them have).
When you know which ones you want, head to HotUKDeals. When you get there, you’ll find all of the major Dimensions packs on offer from the UK’s biggest gaming and toys retailers. Check out discounts from merchants like Smyths, Tesco, Argos, Asda, Very and Amazon, and make sure you get the best price possible. If you are buying three or four packs at once, shopping around is the only way to find the best deals for LEGO available.
After that, you’ll probably find yourself returning to buy additional packs. That’s fine, but always remember to head to HotUKDeals, where you’ll always find the best LEGO deals in the UK. Prices vary from time to time, and our listings always feature the cheapest offers around.
If you intend to make a big purchase (say, six or seven products), don’t buy them in stages. A much better idea is to wait until Black Friday or Cyber Monday in November, when merchants tend to schedule huge discounts before the Christmas period.
Another great idea is to stay on the lookout for 3 for 2 LEGO deals. Retailers like Smyths or Toys R Us commonly bundle together different LEGO Dimensions sets in combination deals, and they can be a superb way to cut the cost of building your collection.
