You don't get the t-shirt or anything until you have turned up , checked in and got your running number and completed the 5k run , also you don't get the 5 pound voucher at the run. You have to go to a decathlon store and show them the email you get.

I've always wanted to start running, like a 5km or 10km, but never know how to that stage

5k is honestly not that difficult for someone with very minimal fitness. My tips would be

    - Spend a bit of money on decent running trainers especially if you will be running on paved surfaces, these eliminate sort joints next day.

    - Sign up for the OS Maps free trial and look for good running routes in your area.

    - Take it slowly to start with, as long as you stay jogging rather than walking you're doing great. Cardiovascular stamina builds quickly so you will quickly progress.

    - Get some sports headphones and listen to your favourite music or podcasts.

    - As you progress and start to build up some sweat invest in some wristbands and a sports tshirt to wick sweat away and keep you more comfortable.

There are also resources like couch to 5k if you are currently very unfit which break it down a bit more but honestly, most people could do a 5k tomorrow if they believed in themselves. Go along to a park run and you will see 6 years olds doing it no problem.

Sounds good but would question the suitability of running routes around Decathlon stores bearing in mind they are normally near busy roads. But it's a generous offer and so not complaining.

Have you actually looked at the routes?  They don’t go around the Decathlon stores.  The one local to me doesn’t even go within a mile or two of it - it’s in a local park.

Can I walk or jog instead of run ?
    CynicalNurse's avatar
Yes. No-one is running 5k and I doubt Decathlon are going to be expecting records to be broken.

    Any running shoe suggestions?
my feet are neither narrow nor wide just feet We cant have a deal on here without someone wanting to spend money

Go into Decathlon, try the cheapest pair on. If they feel comfortable, no pressure points or narrow spots - buy them. If they don't feel quite right, move up to the next most expensive pair and repeat.
I've just counted and I've got 14 pairs of shoes in the rotation currently. About 8 of those pairs are Decathlon, and some of the others are niche trail shoes for different types of terrain. I've run silly mileage in the various pairs and all have lasted well, and I've run multiple ultras in £30-35 Decathlon shoes. Don't get me wrong, if I'm negotiating Sharp Edge in pissing rain - I'm getting my La Sportivas out. But for roads and light trail use, Decathlon shoes hold up really well.

Alternatively get down to a Nike outlet or similar, and try the same approach. Or anywhere.

But don't roll the dice on shoes that might work for someone else but not you. Get into a shop and try some on. Even if you have the most middle of the road, Phil Collins of feet - sizing can vary between manufacturers and sometimes models. Half a thumbs width between your big toe and the end btw, with you heel pushed back into the heel cup is what you're aiming for length wise btw.

is it a real marathon tho?!!

I use 3 miles as my first exercise/warm up at the gym set to do 3 miles in 30 minutes well that my goal I usually get to 3 miles in 29 minutes (I make a game of it to keep myself entertained). I'm not fast I switch it from 4.5mph at walking and 7mph on running. I've got bad knee's not in great shape.

I'm not showing off I'm just saying if a broken old man (I'm late 30's) but with arthritic knee's where I have to strap them up to run and not exactly in shape can do this, you guys are mainly fitter younger and could easily beat this old man, this is on the treadmill not outside but I do run outside/walk on nice days.

They can keep those Trek bars had some at Tough Mudder back in 2017 not tasty thing to snack on when doing that thing.

Great idea but shame it's only limited locations. The nearest one to me is an hour's drive but there's a humongous Decathlon only 10 mins away ☹️
    Darzet_zider's avatar
Plenty of parkrun locations around the UK.

Hot from me, and this 5k thing pops up in my social media from time to time, but my knees are way past running anymore - walking is a challenge. Now if there was a wheelchair option...
  14. mrfinch's avatar
I do running for the love of it, not for the medals. That being said.........I mean if there was one closer to me
  15. James_Harking's avatar
It's truly maddening when you could easily run the 5K but you have a dodgy knee. Make the most of your youth people.

Thanks for posting - I've signed up for the Canada Water one as it's 10 mins from my house, and it never hurts to pick up a medal. 🥇

Doesn't say what the course is yet, but as it's in Southwark Park, I expect it'll be similar to the Parkrun route. (edited)

I've also signed up for Canada water.

I’ve never got a medal for anything. I can now get one for being an avid HUKD user! (And paying £5)
    DomDealyo's avatar
Since we are always looking for shortcuts, can't you skip the middle man and just buy yourself a medal?

The giltbrook route is really lovely and pulls in a run over the 'Iron Giant' viaduct as per en.m.wikipedia.org/wik…uct. Well worth a fiver
  27. Kornelius's avatar
Can I do it on a scooter
  28. T_Wang4s0's avatar
Oh when does this deal expire, and how long does it take to train a lazy fatass to run 5k? Asking for a friend of course.
  29. scud's avatar
It looks like people in those areas don’t run

    Parkrun copy?
    Muig1972's avatar
They've clearly been inspired by Parkrun, but their website is surprisingly vague as to what's actually involved. It seems to be 2 hours of organised play in a park- kicking a ball about or throwing frisbees. It's supposed to be for everyone, but I'd feel a bit odd turning up for that by myself TBH, unlike Parkrun.

"Your race number(s) and tee shirts will be available to collect from your Decathlon" a week before run
Kiprun tshirts look alright, all the pics have people in illuminous ones, guessing that's previous years
No idea what the £5 voucher is going to be, no details anywhere, even in T&C's. Hoping it's just like a gift card, and stackable, not £5 off £40 or something mostly worthless
  35. JDB_78's avatar
