May as well just go SSD if no m2 slot.

Unfortunately the macbooks from those years use a propietary connector - ifixit.com/Gui…251 - if you can get hold of an adapter it should work(tm).

    Hey King,

I don't think the backup to an external drive needs to be bootable. You can boot macos from an external drive if you want. I've done this before when I cloned the internal drive to an external one as I wanted to do a fresh install, but was concerned I would forget to copy one of the important files.

I think your laptop has 2.5" drive and maybe a short m.2 slot. You'll need to open it up to double check

This is Gen3 SSD which is the best price for 3rd Gen M.2 HDD. Gen4 M.2 SSD is more expensive, it is about £120 or slightly less.

Your mobo will take 4 x Gen4 M.2 SSD. You can use fill your slots with this drive but you will get gen3 speed which is still faster from 2.5 SSD.

But if you are buying this expensive mobo, consider getting expensive Gen4 m.2 SSDs like Samsung 980 Pro or WD Black. Prices for Gen4 just started to come down, it may come down further to £100 in the next few weeks.

Using iGPU. 12700K, 64GB 3200. 2x1TB SN850. 3 x 18TB & a bad ass cooler lol. Only using it for compute. If I decide to game etc I’ll add the next equivalent of a 3080. - My laptop covers my gaming need

I use the intatec one on Amazon for 18.99 it's not quite got the aesthetic of the Mac mini but it keeps the nvme stick safely enclosed. There's loads of nvme enclosures on amazon
