Looking for a laptop for my wife for college. I'm not clued up on specs but this does look decent. Any advice would be appreciated. I have a £95 voucher so this would work out to be £204.99 for me.

Keep in contact
Thanks to the onboard camera, this device, once connected to Wi-Fi, will let you take part in video chats or virtual meetings, enabling the fun of the office to come to you.

Intel Pentium processor
The Intel Pentium processor in this laptop has enough speed for you to browse, stream, and cross items off your to-do list with ease.

Its 5-core, 6-thread design allows you to multi-task between a couple of programmes - handy if you want to listen to music whilst working.

What is RAM?
RAM (Random Access Memory) is different to the permanent storage provided by hard disk drives (HDD), solid-state drives (SSD) or memory cards in your equipment. RAM is used by your device to temporarily store data to carry out everyday operations. The more RAM your machine has, the faster you can expect it to open and run programs.

A solid performer
Featuring 8GB of RAM, this computer has enough power for casual tasks like web browsing and word processing as well as more demanding jobs like complex spreadsheets and image manipulation. You'll be able to run a healthy number of windows at once without any obvious lag or slowdown.

Super-fast loading with lots of storage
The 256GB Solid State Drive (SSD) gives you the capacity to store documents and media, while ensuring speedy and dependable access to your files and programs. It'll boot up in a flash, and there'll be enough space for photos, videos, music, and more.

Intel UHD Graphics
Intel’s UHD graphics processing unit (GPU) will enable you to enjoy a number of classic older games, along with some casual (web-based) gaming. You may be able to run more modern titles with reduced effects and frame rates.

Great entertainment
The Full HD display packs loads of detail into films, videos and games, with a built-in sound system that pumps out crisp and punchy audio.

Connecting your other devices
Connect to TVs or external displays with the HDMI output. Listen to music using a 3.5mm headphone jack. Connect to high-speed peripherals with the USB ports, and send data wirelessly between devices using Bluetooth.

Looks a lovely laptop although not super powerful and Intel graphics typically don't match the compatibility and performance of AMD integrated graphics in my experience. Battery life isn't given in the details it just says 50Wh which is the battery capacity not the runtime. If its a IPS panel with reasonable brightness and 17" that display will burn through the battery a bit especially if on high brightness settings. Still seems like a great laptop for general use and light gaming. Maybe consider a similar price Ryzen laptop if you need more performance but prepared to use a smaller screen. I must admit I like laptops to be portable so I can take them with me so I actually go the other way and go for 10" and 11.3" screens. I have a small laptop that can last up to 16hrs on battery and over 9hrs on performance settings. I can use it for a full day and never have to think about recharging the battery until I get home.

    How slightly slower.

Who are you asking? This is one of the 12th Gen Pentiums so 5-core (not 2) and the extra E-cores make a big difference to general snappiness and performance, it's not far behind the 12th Gen i3 which can equal or outperform the 11th Gen i7 chips.

    Lol avoid this, bad processor

It's slightly slower than an i5 1135g7 but has faster single core performance. It's the fastest you'll get in a 17 inch laptop without paying big money.

there isn't a great deal of 17" laptops to choose from, so if that's what's important then go for it.

I'm in a similar situation and ended up buying this. Might be worth a look.

For a minute I thought that was a rubbish deal and then I realised it had gorgeous OLED display hence the original price. Another decent laptop offering.

In contrast here is a bargain basement offering for £61 delivered using the SAVE15 code.

<cannot be linked to here as CCL is banned for some reason>

It gives you some good features like a 1080P IPS touchscreen display and a 128GB SSD but it is only 4GB memory and of course a low end older Pentium chipset but still a decent speed windows laptop if you use a LTSC version of Windows (further debloated) and perhaps set up 8GB of the SSD as virtual memory and do as many performance tweaks as possible.

I've got a 17" Asus with silver keys and gray numerals and I find it hard to see the keys in bright or darker scenarios. I prefer white numerals on black keys.
    TirolForce165's avatar
Black keys with white numerals are the best option without a backlit keyboard
Most laptops under £500 odd quid dont seem to have a backlit keyboard.
I doubt this has one but if it does its a real bonus (edited)

As per the previous comment, 17" is quite niche. Most 17" I came across had low specs and relatively high prices. This seems quite a good balance between specs and price. I don't like big laptops, but I think this is an ok deal, so I voted hot.
    iby2012's avatar
Intel Pentium 3 is worse then an i3 though? Not sure this is a great compromise? But yeah 17" is niche.

Decent CPU and slightly sub-par screen.

    Not really decent is it

Limited choice for 17” systems so not bad if that’s your priority - it’s an IPS panel but middling specs otherwise at 250 nits and 45% NTSC, though this is still usable on value machines.

Pentium Gold 8505 is a 5-core (1P+4E) CPU so should be a lot quicker than older dual-core Pentium Golds.

One exposed RAM slot so you can add another 8GB for £10 at CEX. Should make a decent big screen machine at under £300 - though the Vivobook 16X at the same price is also worth a look.

Hey plewis00 where is the 16X at the same price please?

I posted this laptop a few weeks ago at 329.99 so a steal at this price. I've requested a price match refund, fingers crossed 🤞
    NibblyPig's avatar
They're being beeps about the price match that was one of the things that reassured me buying it. Since they won't honour it I was going to buy at this price and refund but because of their screw up with the postage they won't refund it except in store. Pain in the bottie!

Waiting for the price to hit £200 before I take the plunge, similar spec Chromebooks go for less so no reason to pay more for Windows. Had my 17 inch Asus Chromebook for more than a year and all is good so brand seems ok.
